All rides were open today. Fahrenheit was not open the last three hours. Fahrenheit only had two traith the middle rows closed. (Its Hershey, you can expect that). They finally decided to open Miniature Train, its called Runaway Train.
It was not too cold, everything was open the whole time, it was a great time

After checking the weather, it seems like this weekend will be just as bad as last weekend! I might be going on a camping trip, but if it is going to be like this, we might as well cancel. I will still be out in the area though on Saturday (Penn State college visit), but if this keeps up, it may be a big wash for the Halloween season for the park.

I just got over a nor'easter, and now they say that a bunch of precipitation from the Rocky Mts. AND a hurricane in the Pacific that passed are going to batter us this weekend. I wouldn't expect a lot of things to be open.

Kissing Tower was open earlier. For those going to the park tomorrow, it seems like it might be pretty nice out.

Storm Runner was closed on Saturday too. Every other ride was open. All the roller coasters were runing 1 train except for Fahrenheit and Wild Mouse.Wildcat and Lightning Racer had the middle rows closed off. Why do they want a line so bad. There were already lines on all the roller coasters.

I drove by the park this morning around 10am and they had the Kissing Tower cabin at the top of the tower. It couldn't have been for the flag since they probably use the tower's center. There were people inside, but other than that, the park looked quiet.

That would make sense what you just said. In the past, I've been up by there on a weekday in April and the tower cabin was up there and not rotating. My guess was some maintenance work preparing for the new season. The Derry Township police were also be using a section of the parking lot as a practice area when I was up there that day as well.

By the way, welcome to the forums! Smile

More rides have been shut down according to their mobile site, plus early closure moved up to 8 p.m.

I believe the Classic Cars, Twilight Express, Tilt-A-Whirl and a few of the Founder's Circle kiddie rides remained open as the day went on, according to their mobile site.

Ride Status on Sunday December 13, 2009 (Sorry its late)
    Closed (after 5:00)
    Mini Himalaya
    Dinosaur Go Round
    Granny Bugs
    Merry Derry Dip
    Twin Turnpike: Sports Cars
    Kissing Tower
    Red Berron
    Convoy
    Skyview
    Busy Bees
    Mini Pirate
    Swing Thing
    Monorail
I came in around 6:00 after all the rain and those rides were closed. Why? Too cold, ice, not enough workers. 90% of the stores and eating places were closed to.

They closed the park at 8:00. It was never anouced, I was in the park ready to ride a lot more rides and everything was closed. Why did they close? Not enough people in the park was their reason. The weather was acctually nice. I can see them closing if it is bad weather. No, they have stayed open when we got 5 inches of snow.
If they think that they can make up for them closing early by giving out tickets to come back. That would not work fopr some people. Some people may have traveled a long way because they already planed to go. It rained all day. Whenever it finally got done raining, the people in the park had two good hours, then they closed the park. That is not the way that they should run a park. I just thought that I would point out what happend that day.

We took a quick run to HersheyPark last night, and it was a ghost town. Every ride was open. with no wait.

We also went on Sat 12/12 and that was a huge mistake. I've never seen it soo busy. Not even in the middle of July or August. It was the first time, in a log time, I've actually seen them use both queue sides for the kissing tower. Although Its beyond me why they don't use the rear exist anymore. They can load and unload the ride much quicker that way.

During the week is definitely the time to go for those of you planning a trip. Avoid the weekends at all costs.

    .

They would have to have an employee over there by themselves opening and closing the door and gate.

They have used the rear exit already on busy days when both queues were being utilized. At times, I remember the line spilling out next to the fountain. That never bothered me since the ride is a huge people eater.

Usually the first two weekends are pretty good. We went the first Saturday, again, this year. The place wasn't busy at all. Crowds thinned as the night went on. I always try to avoid black Friday and the Saturday after Thanksgiving though. The place is so packed, it's ridculous. That Sunday is usually not an issue though. Last year we went the first Sunday and the place was totally dead. The only rides shut down the entire evening were monorail, Kissing Tower and the Flyers. They ran everything else under those conditions. But then the weather was a bit chillier as well.

Wow Stormwinder, that's totally unusual. I can't believe they'd do something like that. Heck I'd let the place open for whoever's there to enjoy it. Wonder why alot of food and mechandise places were shut down. That's very unusual.

Stormwinder, I can answer your questions.

Because of the bad weather, we had a massive amount of call offs due to poor road conditions and such. During the day, I was at Swing Thing and did not have a single rider all day. Because the park was so dead that night, they went into whats called modified scheduling, where they try to slow close some kiddie rides and get employees out early. The park was losing soooo much money having the amount of employees that they had in so they started sending them home, and closed the park early.

Couldnt they have consolidated the very few people that were there to Carousel Circle and operated only those rides for the last hour? It would have made me a lot happier than just closing. They did that before on bad weather days other years.

In fact, Founder's Circle WAS the only ride area available prior to 1994 when Music Box was opened. I clearly remember this when the walkway was gated off at the Craftbarn, preventing people from going to where the Pretzel House is. So, yes, that could've been possible.

It has been announced that the park will close at 5:00. Sweet Lights and Zoo America are Closed today.
Also, There will only be four rides open today; Dizzy Drums, Reeses Xtreme Cup Challenge, Carousel, and Fender Bender.
I did not plan on going today, but I can see them closing early in this kind of weather.

Yeah, my mom's cousin lives outside of Baltimore and she said they had about a foot and a half of snow down there. Blizzard warning from Baltimore/D.C. and to the south. The VA area really got hit hard.

By the way, where did you get the pic in your sig? Looks different with the snow.

Is it likely that the rides will be open in the coming days? What is anyone's experience with how Hersheypark handles snow and cold weather in this regard? We are considering visiting right after Christmas, but it wouldn't be worth the trip if only the carousel, Reese's ride, and bumper cars are operating. Thanks for any advice and anyone else's past experience in situations like this.

^ Most of the rides should be open. Kissing Tower and Monorail will most likely be closed the rest of the year. The only thing that you will have to worry about is snow/rain closing rides.

Last night the following were closed

    - Kissing tower
    - Monorail
    - Twin Turnpike sport cars. Looks like these will be closed the rest of the year as all the cars on the track were covered in snow, and the track and loading areas were also covered in snow.

Thank you for the update. It's too bad that they can't remove the snow from those few rides. I recently visited Santa's Village in northern New Hampshire, and they had every ride (except the water rides of course) operating in the snow. They had to plow out the antique cars, remove snow from the coaster (including inside every car), remove snow from the open seats of the ferris wheel, etc.

Anyway, I'm not sure if we'll be heading to HP yet or not. I hate to say that a few rides will make or break the decision, but we were on the fence already, and there are not too many activities to do there this time of year to begin with, so every one helps. Plus it's an eight hour trip. We'd like to see the lights, the show, Chocolate World, and enjoy the rest of the park as much as possible. It would be our first Christmas visit.

It seems like both the monorail and Kissing Tower have been shut down in the past week or so, due to inclement weather. I'm happy I was able to get up when I did. The weather cooperated and all rides were running, except those few that closed later in the night.

gardner14, you were never to CCL before? It's well worth it, especially when all the scheduled rides are running. I even enjoyed it more this year, especially with N.O.E.L.

Only the sport cars were closed. Antique cars were in full operation From the looks of the monorail, it will probably be down the rest of the season. The walkway up the loading ramp was still covered in snow.

I believe monorail and Wave swinger will be closed for the rest of the season, as well as kissing tower as long as the temperature stays below freezing which it has at night. Sports are done for the year because they keep breaking and maintenance is tired of fixing them. The antiques should stay open though.

Is Wave Swinger down? HersheyparkGuy didn't mention this in his response from last night. He only said the Kissing Tower, Monorail, and Sports Cars were down. Can anyone else confirm the Wave Swinger?

Trust me, trumpetplayer works at the park, he knows what's going on. Besides, it's a pain riding that thing even when it's right at 40F.

^Before your response, Ccron10, I called the park myself tonight. The woman I spoke with at the season pass office "checked the computer" and she said the only rides closed tonight are the Monorail and the Kissing Tower. I hope she's right.

I always found the mobile HersheyPark site to be fairly accurate. At least over the summer it was.

As of 9:48 tonight, it said just as you said. The monorail and the kissing tower.

Well, if either the Sports Cars or Classic Cars were open, then I would consider the Twin Turnpike ride open. It's basically two sides of the same ride. I wouldn't expect the park to list it as closed in that case.

Monorail and Kissing Tower were listed. No Sports Cars. If they do not any intentions for opening them up for the remainder of the season, by all means, they should list it on the closed rides list.
